Welcome to the eighth running of The Trilogy, a three day stage race through the Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area . . . a run across West Virginia’s highest hill . . . a run of days with friends.

These very special runs traverse the WV Highlands and her unique landscapes.  Runners who choose to experience this event will be rewarded with spectacular views of waterfalls, beautiful fall foliage, and breathtaking vistas that will be forever etched upon their hearts. Race headquarters will be the Spruce Knob Mountain Center’s 400 acre outdoor education facility in the shadow of Spruce Knob. Take a look at the links below to get a sense of the event which is presented by the West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners in conjunction with Experience Learning/Spruce Knob Mountain Center.  Please contact us with any questions.

Please read all of this information.

  1. While the Trilogy is designed as a three-day stage race, those wishing to run one or two races may submit entries for individual races.
  2. The complete Trilogy is limited to 100 participants. Entrants for the 50k and 50m must be at least 18. Sorry, but there are no pets allowed at The Mountain Institute.
  3. Registration for the Trilogy, the individual 50k or the individual 50 mile races close September 15, 2017. Registration for the Half-marathon will remain open on Run Sign Up until 10/9/17. There will be race day registration for the Half Marathon and 5k races.
  4. Start Times:  50k on Friday 7:00am, 50 mile on Saturday 6:00am, Half Marathon/5k on Sunday 9:00am.
  5. There are time limits for the 50k and 50 mile races.
    The 50k is 10.5 hours. There is
     one liberal cut-off; AS# 3 Judy Springs, Mile 16.9 at 12:30pm (5hrs 30min).  If you reach aid-station #3 after 12:30, you will not complete the next 6-mile loop to #4, but you will not be pulled from the course. You will follow the course to aid-station #5 at Seneca Creek and will get in a marathon for the day. Note, the 50K time limit is lenient to allow 3-day participants the opportunity to bridle their effort for the arduous 50-mile day-2.
    The 50-mile is 14 hours.  The 50-mile has three cutoffs; AS #3 Whites Run mile 24.9 at 12:50pm (6hrs 50mins), AS#4 Horton mile 33.6 at 3:30 pm (9hrs 30min) and AS#6 Allegheny Mtn Trail mile 46.2 at 7:10pm (13hrs 10min). 
  6. Full Trilogy 50K/50M/HM entrants will receive a Patagonia Midweight Capilene zip-neck shirt and a Run For The Hills Half Marathon cotton T.
    50k only entrants will receive a Patagonia long sleeve shirt.
    50 mile only entrants will receive a Patagonia Lightweight Capilene long sleeve crew shirt.
    Run For The Hills Half Marathon & 5k entrants will receive a cotton T-shirt.
  7. Meals included with respective entries are;
    Trilogy– Thur, Fri, Sat dinners, daily light breakfast and Sun post race lunch
    50k only– Thur dinner, light Fri breakfast
    50 mile only– Fri dinner, light Sat breakfast
    Half Marathon & 5k only – Sat dinner, light Sun breakfast and Sun post race lunch
  8. Additional meals for runners or guests may be purchased for Thur – Sat dinners at $10 each, or Sunday lunch at $15.
  9. Packet pickup for the Trilogy and individual 50k/50m/HM will begin at 4:30pm Thursday October 12 at the main yurt.
    Packet for the individual 50m/HM races may also be picked up on the evening before the race and for the HM beginning at 7:00am race day.
  10. In an effort to reduce waste we create during this event  the 50k and 50mile races are “cupless”.  We have invested in collapsible cups that you will receive at packet pickup to use. Here is what they look like. If you have one from a previous year please bring with.
  11. There will be a brief prerace meeting at 7:00pm following dinner on Thursday and  approximately 8:30 on Friday.
  12. Awards for the Trilogy entrants will be 1st, 2nd & 3rd place men & women open, 1st place 40-49, 1st place  50-59, and 1st 60 and over.
  13. Awards for the Run For The Hills Half Marathon will be 17 & under, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+.
  14. There will be daily recognition awards for the 50k and 50 mile first place man & woman.
  15. Refunds will be granted minus $10 until August 25, 2017.  No entry fees will be refunded after this date; please do not ask.
  16. Crew access will be limited to the aid stations outlined in the Course Description section.  For the safety and consideration of all participants, other aid stations or roads that runners will be on are closed to crew and vehicles.  Crew driving directions can be found HERE.
