November 29, 2003
As our first year as a group draws to a close, let us take an opportunity to congratulate ourselves for coming together to form this loose-knit collection of runners. It has been an exciting year for me and I hope you also. Running is such an individual endeavor with many rewards, but it is surprising how much more it can also be in the company of friends.
We have achieved many of the goals established back in January and will continue to work toward others in 2004. Here are some of our accomplishments.
At our organizational meeting on January 4, 2003 we had 19 charter members. Our number has grown to 58 with members in WV, VA, MD, OH and NC. Some of the activities your dues and donations have funded include; insurance and national affiliation through membership in the American Association of Running Clubs, domain name and website hosting through cihost.com, NFMT Run weekend, motivation and association with a fun group (priceless).
wvmtr.org is our voice with over 8000 hits to date. The Yahoo Newsgroup is a fun, informal communication tool. There have been a couple issues of the Newsletter posted on the website.
Highlands Sky Trail Run - our only sponsored race this year (a real success)

A club fun run in the Wayne/Cabel County area
And a 20 mile club run in Cass when Merrily gets around to inviting us
Some of the other items we have worked toward, but not yet accomplished are; a WV Trail Run Series, development of more mid-distance trail run events, a WV Ultrarun Series, a method to conduct online meetings, website improvements such as reports on great runs in WV and running gear, WVMTR 501(c)3 status and incorporation.
2004 dues are now due and needed to carry on our organization. Dues are still a nominal $10 individual and $15 family, but donations are more than welcome. Some have already renewed. The cover email states if your renewal is due. Please check the Membership Form on the website and update information if needed. New members who joined in the later part of 2003 will be current for 2004.
Lastly, Jody and I would like to invite everyone to a party celebrating the New Year and WVMTR’s first year. Activities may include running (very likely), xc skiing, sledding, hot tubbing, eating/drinking, swimming, or just visiting. There will be something for everyone here on Saturday, January 3rd at 11:00 am. We will also have a brief meeting with possible amendments to our bylaws. Hope you can make it. Please drop us a note if you can and if you need directions.
